Who We Are

Our Deacon In-Charge

Matthew

The Reverend Matthew Brown joined the Two Saints Ministry (St. Peter’s Lakehill and St. David’s by the Sea Cordova Bay) as Lead Pastor and Deacon In-Charge on June 1, 2016. A newcomer to Victoria, Matthew and his wife, the Reverend Gillian Hoyer, recently completed their Master of Divinity degrees at Huron University College in London, Ontario, and were soon afterwards ordained to the transitional diaconate by the Right Reverend Logan McMenamie, Bishop of British Columbia. Matthew and Gillian are the first husband and wife to be ordained at the same time in the over one hundred and fifty year history of the Diocese of British Columbia.

Matthew originally hails from the Gatineau region of western Quebec, where he was active in the ministries of the Anglican Church of Canada from a very early age. Baptized in the rural parish of St. Thomas’ Silver Creek, Matthew served as one of the congregation’s churchwardens for five years before discerning a call to ordained ministry. More than anything else, a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ in both word and deed lies at the heart of Matthew’s vocation. Prior to seminary, Matthew worked full-time leading the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa’s Child Poverty Initiative, and later served as that diocese’s Youth Missioner, where he partnered with clergy and laity from across the Ottawa area to increase youth leadership within the Anglican Church of Canada and beyond. While living in London, Matthew served for two years as the Seminarian at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the Diocese of Huron, where he was an active contributor to the parish’s preaching and teaching ministries. A passionate advocate for social justice and the empowerment of local communities, Matthew has been blessed to participate in the ministries of the Anglican Church of Canada at the regional, provincial and national levels. In addition to his Master of Divinity degree, Matthew also holds a BA (Honours) majoring in political science and history from Queen’s University, and an MA in Canadian History from the same institution.

When not working and praying with the community at Two Saints, or spending time with community groups in greater Victoria, Matthew can usually be found walking with Gillian along Dallas Road, enjoying a fresh-water stream with his favourite fishing rod, or spending quality time with the one and only ‘lady Cricket,’ the couple’s one and a half year old rescue kitten!
